Three Images

A: Best Piece of Artwork from High School

This piece of artwork was made in year 9 at my Hong Kong Secondary School. Every year, year 9 students would carve and create some tiles, which if fairly good, will be permanently installed on their year’s wall. And mine was luckily to be chosen for 1 of the many (around 120 is chosen out of 200 people) tiles. The topic was about seasons, and I chose autumn. The many small leaves represented falling leaves, and they were in green, which can be seen as life and vigor and therefore represent summer and spring; the falling can be seen as passing by. So the falling leaves can be seen as spring and summer is passing. The big yellow leaf represents autumn and is slowly forcing its way into center stage, shows that autumn is coming and will be here soon. So rather than the beauty of the piece of art (which honestly isn’t that great), I thought the message behind it is much more interesting and is where the creativity lies.

B: Great Piece of Architecture

This is the Great Wall of China, as we all know, the only piece of architect you can see from space on Earth. There is a Chinese saying from Mao “Your not a man if you haven’t been to the Great Wall”, to show the significance of this building in Chinese history. It was originally built to defend China from enemies and has since lost this usage. Now, you can only visit only a small part of it due to the lack of maintenance. And I'm proud to say that I’ve been there to feel it’s magnificent size first hand, and I can assure you the view is stunning when standing on top and looking down, but to reach that you have to first walk up the hundreds of huge steps which is very physically challenging, the steps are huge and very steep, so it in some sense proves that designing steps aren’t as easy as it looks, because the architect who designed this obviously didn’t do a great job in that aspect. Still, it’s a great piece of architecture and a place you must visit.

C: Original Photograph of Something Beautiful

This photo was taken outside my house from about 1 year ago. I find this interesting and beautiful due to the contrast between the calmness of the blue sky on the left and the dullness of the grey sky on the right. This one photo could show how dramatic weather and nature itself can change in a matter of seconds. Another interesting part is the competition illustrated in the photo, how it gives a feeling that as if the grey was trying to devour the blue and dominate the skies, while the blue could only retreat powerlessly and eventually disappear.

Text from Image: On the night of her first school dance, she asked her mother what she thought. She replied “you don’t dress a pig up unless ya gonna eat it”

Moffatt: IMPACT, CRUSH, COLD

This piece of artwork was from Tracey Moffatt’s series of images “Scarred For Life II”. The materials used in this piece of artwork is just paper. What makes it a piece of artwork is the image. The image was produced by taking a photo of the girl in this pose then printed with the offset print method, according to Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery website. This printing method doesn’t give the image the best of quality, thus giving it a worn feeling as though it was very old. A text is then added to the canvas to explain the scenario. This helps produce a feeling that as if this photo was part of a memory, and hence make us think of what will happen when the girl grows up and what affects these words will have on her.

Gascoigne: ORDER, FOLLOW, INFLUENTIAL

According to the Rosyln Oxley9 Gallery website, this piece of work was made from retro reflective road signs on wood. The production method was finding these materials, which were basically discarded by others, and put them into use by modifying their size and shape, then joining many of these modified road signs together and thus creating a new image and a new piece of art. Although the method is simple, the formation and order these road signs are aligned is what makes it into a fine piece of art. Also the fact that many of the materials chosen in her art were previously used and therefore worn out or weathered played a significant part in delivering her messages and giving her artwork a very distinctive style among artists.
